Spain: BASF Awards for the Best Practice of Circular Economy

The first edition of the awards for the best practice of Circular Economy in Spain, organized by BASF Group and Club de Excelencia en Sostenibilidad has been a success since there has been up to 100 applications received for projects and initiatives that have circularized the economy and that face the challenge of limited natural resources.

The objective of the awards is to recognize those projects or research that with circular economy contribute or have the potential to contribute specifically to the development of our country's business competitiveness, with special attention to those projects that include the perspective of the environmental and social sustainability in the development and purpose of them.

The applications of projects and initiatives received are based on the different circular business models:

• Circular supply

• Resource recovery

• Extend product life

• Platforms for sharing products or services

• Products as services

• Innovation in processes

BASF Group and Club de Excelencia en Sostenibilidad have established an Honor Committee that has expressed its support for the Awards in this first edition and whose presidency is held by their Royal Majesties the King and Queen of Spain. The Honor Committee also counts with the presence of Daniel Calleja, General Director of the Environment of the European Commission, and Carles Navarro, General Director of BASF Española.

A Jury has also been formed by experts from the business, academic and institutional field that will evaluate each of the applications in the different categories in the First Awards for the best practice of Circular Economy in Spain. This jury is composed of Mª Ángeles de las Heras, Secretary of State for Universities, Research, Development and Innovation; Javier Cachón, General Director of Biodiversity and Environmental Quality; Xavier Ribera, Director of Communication, Institutional Relations and Sustainability of BASF Española; and Juan Alfaro, General Secretary of Club de Excelencia en Sostenibilidad. This jury will evaluate the strategic vision of the Circular Economy, the economic, social and environmental impact; the durability over time; the replicability of the model; the innovative nature of the proposal; the scope of the project; dissemination in the value chain; and the existence of monitoring indicators.

An award will be given to the winner of each of the categories, which will be delivered at a public event in the second half of 2019, moment in which the decision of the jury will be disclosed.
