CSR Europe and Microsoft gather for first Pact for Youth seminar

The first seminar on the European Pact for Youth took place at the Microsoft Executive Briefing Centre on January 18.

The roundtable gathered representatives from youth, business, education and the European institutions.

Four youth leaders gave their recommendations as a form of reverse mentoring. The other stakeholders were then asked to respond to their ideas. Please find below some of the key points that were raised:

  • Skills development and employability of youth is and should remain a priority in Europe
  • Supporting and working with teachers is essential to provide quality education to young people
  • Provide access to high quality opportunities to young people (e.g. apprenticeships, training, entry jobs)
  • The importance of having projects that involve collaboration between Industry, Education and Governments. All three need to be around the table.
  • There is a need for practical experience during education. Be it entrepreneurship, dual learning systems or informal education, it is important to gain hands-on experience for young people to be prepared for the labour market. Furthermore we need to create recognition of skills acquired outside of formal education.
  • Young people need hard skills, basic skills but also soft skills, an entrepreneurial mindset and the ability to adapt and learn along the way

The ideas have also been captured in the Pact for Youth visual map above.
