EU ministers agree on amendment to Posted Workers Directive
At the Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council on October 23, EU Ministers of Employment and Social Affairs also agreed on a European Commission proposal to amend the Posted Workers Directive.
This European Commission’s effort in “updating” legislation is directed at making the internal labour market fairer and its rules easier to enforce. The proposal’s key principle is equal pay for the same work in the same place. The aim is to not only create fairness for the posted workers but also to prevent the undercutting of wages for local workers.
The Directive mainly targets the construction sector, the manufacturing industry, education, health and social work services and business services.
The amendment has not yet been formally adopted but the agreement in the Council marks the beginning of discussions between the European Parliament, the Council and the European Commission, in view of adopting a final proposal.
