Council of the EU adopts conclusions on 'A sustainable European future'
On June 20, 2017, the Council of the EU adopted its conclusions on “A sustainable European future: The EU response to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, reiterating the strong commitment of the European Union and its Member States to implement the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and, more specifically, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Amongst other things, the Council calls on the European Commission to prepare an implementation strategy by mid-2018.
The document places great emphasis on the role the private sector should play in the achievement of the SDGs, inviting companies to adopt responsible business conduct and to invest in development cooperation via the future European Fund for Sustainable Development (EFSD).
