Greece: Results From The Summer School On CSR 2019

Monday, September 23 - Friday September 27, 2019 – Athens // More than 30 motivated professionals joined Summer School on CSR 2019, a 5 day intense training program around Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility, enriched with company visits and lectures from top experts like Dr. Ioannis Ioannou (Associate Professor, London Business School), Dr. Alexandros Antonaras (Associate Professor, University of Nicosia), Dr. Constantine Manasakis (Assistant Professor, University of Crete), Dr. Pavlos A. Vlachos (Associate Professor, ALBA Graduate Business School, The American College of Greece) and Mr. Jan Noterdaeme (Co-founder and Senior Advisor for CSR Europe, Member of the teaching team at the Louvain School of Management (UCL - Université Catholique de Louvain).

In an era of growing global challenges, the business leadership challenges are greater than ever. Stakeholders express their expectations and exert pressure in addressing urgent issues, such as climate change. In this context, a number of leading companies realize the global and business developmental potential of sustainability and take bolder steps to expand in the fastest-growing markets under the spectrum of the SDGs. The Summer School on CSR 2019 aimed to provide advanced training on the identification of sustainability-related business opportunities, the inclusion of sustainability in the core of business strategy as well as on the resulting responsible corporate management to leading young researchers and professionals.

The training focused on various aspects around Sustainability. The core topics that the trainees had a lecture on, discussed and finally learned about, were: Responsible organizations and sustainable management, Corporate Responsibility, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the UN Global Compact, Sustainable value creation, Business impact, accountability and reporting and Collaborative transformation of the value chain. These topics were accompanied by insightful case studies presented from companies – leaders in their industry like TITAN, ALPHA BANK, HELLENIC PETROLEUM and MCCAIN.

In order to receive their professional certificate, participants have the opportunity to work on real-case scenarios, analyzing existing issues/challenges faced by industry leaders, in their effort to better manage their impact. This phase of the training is ongoing, ending at December 2019 where the finale deliverable will be presented to the companies. All participants are asked to collaborate with other trainees in working-groups of 4-6 members working together with their assigned professor on these real-case scenarios, developing specific approaches.

After the completion of the Summer School on CSR 2019, the participants were asked to evaluate the program, in order for the organizers (CSR HELLAS, The American College of Greece and University of Crete) to see the level of satisfaction, as long as the quality of services they provided. More than 93% of the participants found the overall value of the event “Excellent” and will try to integrate the outcomes/insights they obtained from the training into their work environment. The Summer School on CSR 2019 met the expectations both the participants and the organizing committee, with the last ones discussing and planning the possibility of a similar training program to be held again.
