Posting of workers: final vote at the European Parliament

On May 29, 2018, the European Parliament approved the revised rules of posting of workers.

  • Under the agreed text, all of the host country’s remuneration rules must apply to posted workers.
  • Travel, board and accommodation costs will have to be paid by the employer and not deducted from workers’ salaries.
  • The duration of the posting has been set at a maximum of 12 months, with a possible extension of 6 months.
  • Member states will have two years to transpose the rules into their national laws.

A posted worker is an employee who is sent by his or her employer to perform a service in another EU member state on a temporary basis. Posted workers are different from EU mobile workers in that they remain in the host Member State temporarily and do not integrate in its labour market. On the contrary, EU mobile citizens do integrate, since they go to another Member State to seek work.

In collaboration with members, stakeholders, transportation – and logistics companies, CSR Europe is working to establish a group of sustainability leaders within the transport and logistics sector.

The objective is to develop social guidelines and an implementation assessment for the sector. The group of sustainability leaders will give companies a collective voice to drive sustainable change and improve labour conditions in the sector.

The social guidelines will serve as common guiding principles containing requirements and expectations for logistics companies, their affiliates, sub-contractors and suppliers on social responsibility.

The implementation assessment will support logistics companies to ensure their own, as well as their suppliers’, compliance with the social guidelines.
