EU Leaders Call for Enhanced Climate Ambition

After the two-day Council Summit in October, EU Leaders called for “enhanced ambition and increased climate action by the EU at the global level”. Setting EU climate targets will be a priority to respond to the threat posed on the environment and the society by climate change.

Climate change was included as third priority on the agenda of the European Council at the Summit on 17-18 October 2019. In line with its June 2019 conclusions, the Council is determined to support the EU in leading the way in a socially fair and just green transition in the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

However, EU Member States were still divided on how to protect the environment and society from the climate crisis. On one side, Denmark, the Netherlands and France are pushing the EU to increase its 2030 emissions reduction target, while on the other hand, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, and Slovakia are reluctant to adopt these goals. In attempt to shorten the political gap, on the first day of the Summit Poland asked for financial support of the EU to be able to endorse and meet the 2030 targets.

Heads of States and Governments will meet again in December to finalise the framework of the EU’s long-term strategy on climate change adoption. Early in 2020, the Council will submit the EU’s long-term strategy to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The Council, together with the EU Commission and Parliament, will receive in December the CEOs Call to Action for a Sustainable Europe by 2030. Initiated by CSR Europe, the Call aims at accelerating sustainable growth, tackling climate change and creating inclusive prosperity.
