LIFE Programme: EC Invests €243 million on environment, climate action

The European Commission (EC) has deducted a quarter of a billion euros from the EU budget to support projects aimed to improve the quality of life in Europe’s transition to a more sustainable future.

The European Commission allocated additional funding for projects under LIFE programme for the Environment and Climate Action to boost environmental protection, mitigation of climate change and wildlife conservation. This increase leads to a total of €430.7 million in investments to facilitate numerous trans-national projects throughout the EU.

Major investments, around €190 million, will be reserved to projects in the field of resource efficiency, environmental governance, and information and dissemination. The lion share of funds devoted to these activities gives space to many projects aimed to boosting sustainability within the European arena. In this way, LIFE programme becomes the engine of the Commission to achieve its objectives regarding the creation of more sustainable and circular economic processes. For example, the EC will support projects on the reuse of plastic items and recycling methods as these activities are detrimental in enabling the EC to achieve its goals outlined on the European Strategy for Plastics in a Circular Economy.

On climate action, the EU will allocate around €45 million to foster the climate mitigation, adaptation and governance. The funds will harness farming and forestry activities under LIFE programme to help communities improving their resilience and capacity to adapt to the new challenges of the 21st century.
