Key highlights from the Third Sustainability and Innovation Conference

On October 11 and 12, CSR Europe and Huawei brought together stakeholders from business, politics, cities, NGOs and other stakeholders to discuss how ICT can be a key driver to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The key messages that emerged during the Sustainability Salon Seminar on Safe and Resilient Cities on October 11:

  • ICT solutions can accelerate cities to become more safe, inclusive, attractive and sustainable.
  • Trust and transparency about data governance is important.
  • The real challenge is the process for the implementation, raising awareness and finding the right partners.
  • There is no one-size fits all solution, but a need for collaboration of local partners (public & private) to address local challenges.

The key messages that emerged during the Sustainability & Innovation Conference on October 12:

  • The report, the ‘EU ICT sustainable development goals benchmark’, underlines the strong connections between sustainable development and ICT sector development in EU countries.
  • EU countries with advanced ICT sectors perform better on sustainable development.
  • The European Union has a comprehensive plan to work on ICT and SDGs.
  • Collaboration between the public and private sectors is a key tool for having a major impact on ICT and on the society.
  • The importance of investing in the technologies with the strongest impact on the SDGs - broadband, cloud, the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and big data.
  • There are still many areas of improvement. It is essential to bring the network together on the SDGs and to make full use of the potential of ICT.
