Spain: A Guide for Companies Seeking to Address the Wage Gap

Madrid, October 1, 2019.- El Club de Excelencia en Sostenibilidad and Sagardoy Abogados presented “the Methodological Guide for the Measurement of the Wage Gap in the Company” at the General Council of the Attorneys of the Courts (C / Serrano Anguita, 8-10, 28004 Madrid). It is a didactic guide through which companies can obtain the necessary tools to correctly measure their salary gap.

The wage gap is one of the manifestations of gender inequality in our society. The inequality in the remuneration that men and women receive in the labor market is a phenomenon that is increasingly important in the business and institutional sphere. That is why the wage gap is constituted as an objective indicator that allows measuring this inequality. This is the difference between the average pay between employed women and men. Achieving equality has already been established as a priority in different national, regional and international plans. There is a clear social and business interest in knowing, quantifying and, where appropriate, correcting inequalities in the workplace between men and women. That is why El Club de Excelencia en Sostenibilidad and Sagardoy Abogados are committed to helping companies measure their salary gap in order to know it and in order to minimize it.

The guide analyzes the current situation of the salary gap at a national and international level, it offers a comprehensive methodology for the diagnosis and measurement of the wage gap, it shows the best national and international business practices in this area, and finally, proposes recommendations of reduction to the business fabric, as well as, public policies of promotion for the competent Public Administrations.

Juan Alfaro, General Secretary of the Club de Excelencia en Sostenibilidad, was in charge of inaugurating the presentation of the guide, highlighting that this guide serves “to facilitate in a practical way all the knowledge in the matter at national level and with international good practices; and so that companies can know first-hand the different methodologies and best professional experiences in the field of action that concerns us here.”

Iñigo Sagardoy, President of Sagardoy Abogados presented an analysis of the regulatory context, clarifying that "from the strictly legal point, an unbalanced salary gap without explanation generates risks for the company, and in the long run, it is totally counterproductive."

Finally, Ignacio Miranda and Irene Alarcó, of the Club de Excelencia en Sostenibilidad, explained the development of the methodology and the proposed action plan that should be undertaken by organizations that would like to measure their salary gap.

Companies are increasingly seeing the reduction of the wage gap and equal pay as strategic aspects, which boost access to talent and diversity, and, consequently, innovation and growth. That is why the Methodological Guide for the Measurement of the Wage Gap in the Company” can be downloaded for free on the website of the Club de Excelencia en Sostenibilidad.
